Northern Ireland's growing season is longer and wetter than most of the UK. Get the timing right and your lawn looks sharp from spring through autumn with very little fuss.
March — the first cut
Once the grass starts moving (usually mid-to-late March here), it's time for the first proper cut. Keep it on the higher side — you're tidying up, not scalping it.
April to June — peak growth
This is when grass grows fastest. A cut every 2 weeks keeps it neat and encourages thicker, healthier growth. Skip a few weeks and you're suddenly looking at a hayfield.
July to September — steady maintenance
Growth slows a bit in dry spells but picks up after rain (which, this being NI, is never far away). Every 2–3 weeks is about right.
October — the last cut
One final tidy before winter sets in. Leave it slightly longer than usual — that bit of extra length protects the roots through the cold months.
Regular short cuts always look better than one big rescue mission.
